OK, so this study is about bike commuters only, not cyclists as a whole? The Reuters headline doesn't specify that, but I'll play along.

More bike commuters -- no more provision for them in traffic design or flow -- no more emphasis on road-user education -- increased crowding on the roads overall -- a 'spike' in road-rage-related incidents, whether a bike is involved or not; all these things will naturally add up to a more hazardous venue of transit.

More and more people see their vehicles as a 'weapon of justice', a forceful means of eliminating what they perceive as an INjustice, namely, being inconvenienced or slowed down by another road user. Whether they actually plow the 'offender', or just use schoolyard bullying, they have joined an enlarging group of vehicular vigilantes -- who have no clue.

Sad. Tragic.

And criminal.

Really, the time for talk, research, and testing is over; like the female cyclist a Louisiana said a few years ago, when she witnessed several of her fellow riders hit-and-run deliberately, "How many of us have to die before something is done?"

"Increased Popularity of Urban Bicycle Transportation in America: The Perfect Storm for an Injury Epidemic."

We can blame the press for sensationalizing the results of a scientific study, but this title for the presentation is in itself sensational. And ridiculous. "Injury Epidemic"? It is the correct use of the term epidemic, meaning an increased occurrence of disease (or injury, I suppose) compared to what is expected. But this title makes it sound like there are going to be piles of helmet-and-trouser-cuff-adorned corpses on the side of the road. Jeez.
