I have definitely seen more bicyclists/joggers around where I live. While I'm glad that they are being healthy, I worry when I drive by them if the shoulder of the road is narrow. I think that if areas widen shoulders/bike paths it would help even more people aspire to be healthy and raise the safety of those people.

Regarding First Lady Michelle Obama's drive against childhood obesity as described by Neal Peirce in Citiwire (http://citiwire.net/post/2066/). There is a synergy that is obvious (or should be) in dealing with rates of childhood obesity, rates of human-powered mobility, urban planning, transportation planning, public health, global warming, oil consumption, and health care costs.

We will not bring down health care costs unless people are healthier. Human powered mobility is good for health and childhood mobility, such as promoted with the Safe Routes to Schools program, encourages lifetime good health habits. We will not bring down our dependence on foreign oil, stop high-risk oil drilling, nor slow our death march towards global warming catastrophe, unless we shed some of our dependence on being ferried around everywhere in cars. Not to mention, changing the bad health and transportation habits we developed in the last century will save a lot of money. We need to connect all the dots linking transportation, health, and mobility.
