The trucking advocates are crowing about the fact that the office of livability was removed from the federal spending bill:

Do you have any idea what happened there or what the significance is?

Good luck, Andy. We really need to stay out of the way of the protocol fights but remind all our allies in Congress of the need to stay focussed on the mission.

While it is important to provide transportation alternatives to aging boomers (and as I race towards my sixties, I count myself in that group) I would be really careful about using hot button phrases such as "...have to take their keys away...". It is definitely a huge issue headed our way, but tends to terrify a lot of people who are headed into the golden years and afraid of lost independence. So you are right, we need to design programs for older folks as well as others who cannot or should not be driving, but need to couch the rationale carefully.

We lost a pair of motorcyclists to a dazed and confused 89 year old motorist a few years back up here in BombTown. I still remember being interviewed as a witness to that crash, and watching the lifeless bodies lying in the road.

I understand your frustration regarding the opposition. One tactic that I’ve used that has drawn some intrigue is pointing out to the transportation folks the baby boomers are rapidly graying. What infrastructure are they currently providing that will accommodate an increasing percentage of the population that will have to have their keys taken away? Pedestrian and cycling routes connecting residential and commercial districts provide seniors continued mobility and independence. (And note, I used cycling – not bicycling – some seniors favor the adult tricycle for stability.) I do seem to recall reading of a retirement community that made extensive use of the tricycles but I can’t seem to find that reference. If you know of where it is, I would greatly appreciate learning more about it.
