Update on Black Hawk Bike Ban
We want to update you on theĀ bike ban in Black Hawk, CO. We have continued to monitor the situation and we are supporting our colleagues at Bicycle Colorado in the fight to overturn it.They offer the following update:
More than 100 bicyclists joined together at the state capitol last week to show their support to keep roads open to bikes in Colorado. State Senators Greg Brophy and Chris Romer spoke out about the bike ban.
“This is a basic freedom issue,” said Senator Brophy. Senator Romer spoke about the message a ban sends about Colorado, “Why do we want to have the only city in America to ban bicycling through the entire city?”

Cyclists can speak out by signing Bicycle Colorado’s online petition.
For those looking to ride around Black Hawk and avoid being ticketed, our friends at Adventure Cycling have an update on the affected Great Parks South Route.
We’ll continue to share updates as they are available.

The ban on bicycles is short sighted and ill advised. There are other responses to bicycle safety that can bring benefit to the town in addition to improving safety. Bicycle awareness campaigns for motorists and safety training for cyclists and bike lanes and bike boulevards for major arteries are good responses. Set up bike lanes on lightly traveled roads is particularly effective. Bicycle friendly towns stimulate the local economy because cyclists spend money too.
