Well said Mr Clark! You hit all the nails squarely and forcefully on their heads in you rebuttal, particularly by starting off saying "This is SO the wrong question."

I'm very glad knowing you are leading the way for LAB!

Choice? The current American thinking supposes there is a choice, ( i.e., a choice for just cars or cars and bicycles), for the cities, suburbs, and rural American when in fact we are at a point where there are no choices. At stake: mainly health of people and the environment. Drivers of automobiles and cyclists must get along. Same with pedestrians. I am optimistic that in the near future all roads will be built for cars, cyclists, and walkers rather than just for a part of the group. Then all will seem natural rather than uncomfortatble. Transportation by walking, bicycle, mass transit, or car is an intrinsic right we all share. Andy's points are excellent and as always I appreciate the hard work the LAB is doing for our right to bike for transportation! Thank you. Bill Poindexter a Car-Free American.

Remember to consider this question in context of the enormous subsidies that we provide, as a society, to automobiles. Roads, police, the traffic-court system, parking, are all paid for by taxpayers. Yet, when we talk about transportation, the discussion is typically in terms of "subsidizing" buses, trains, bicycle infrastructure--and leaving out the fact that cars are hugely subsidized.

None of this is my original thinking. Read "Asphalt Nation", by Jane Holtz Kay. http://www.janeholtzkay.com/asphaltnation/index.html
