Lane deviation technology isn't out here yet, Bill, and I suspect the aftermarket will be optional. Therefore, many drivers will not have it, esp. in New Mexico where poverty is rampant and new cars are a luxury many cannot afford. So we have to deal with rumble strips and awareness. Kudos to the League, therefore, for LAB's efforts working for drastically improved language that benefits a lot of rural cyclists (and urban ones who ride out of town, which is quite common in New Mexico).

Smart roads and smart cars might be nice, but my concern is such concepts could be used to argue for eroded driver responsibility, i.e., as the defense lawyer says, the gizmo failed, not my client. We need to make sure we hold drivers (and cyclists) to high standards rather than offloading responsibility for safety to a gizmo entirely. The present trend towards increasing driver distraction and lax attitudes towards accountability are not good news for anyone.

Keep the rubber side down and happy holidays, folks.

Lane deviation technology has made the need for rumble strips obsolete. In a short time most new cars will have this equipment and the aftermarket will allow for retrofits. We should be advocating for "smart roads" which will be safer for everybody. Rumble strips shorten the road's lifespan and are expensive. Let's work toward a common goal that will safe money.

Although I have been (and unfortunately, probably will continue to be) critical of LAB's advocacy efforts, I commend the League for whatever it did in getting FHWA to amend its rumble strip policy. While a big improvement, FHWA policies are still only advisory, and in section 12 of the revised TA there are plenty of loopholes for states to sidestep the recommendations. I don't blame LAB for this, I merely point it out as a reality we must deal with.

I also commend LAB for its own rumble strip policy as outlined on the website. I consider it to be fair and balanced.
