I gained my LCI certification through a grant paid by a SRTS program. SRTS has played a huge role in training new LCI's and allowing us access to schools, community centers and other avenues to deliver instruction to the next generation of cyclists. If folks like Cantor's republicans and Bill Hoffman have their way, this opportunity will be lost for another generation.

This bill also strips any concern for cyclists on our roadways or the mandate for state DOT staffing to ensure projects consider the needs of cyclists. This goes beyond dedicated bikeways, and affect cyclists of all experience levels. Things like adequate shoulders, routine maintenance, signed routes, bike maps, share the road signage, helmet/light give aways, etc. etc. could potentially be eliminated from many communities. How any cyclist could view this as "government largess" is beyond me. Thankfully the League, America Bikes and the thousands who sent emails last week do not have such a myopic view of what bicycling can and should be.

I wish there was a 'LIKE' button for these post.
What is boils down to for me is that riding my bike is a normal activity. It's how I get to work, it's what I enjoy doing with my friends. I've ridden my whole life, I've taught my family how to ride, I teach others how to ride (LCI here). I firmly believe it's my birthright to use a public road. I believe that the right to use a public road does not depend on what vehicle is used- it's the person , not the vehicle who has the right.
Why won't my government support this? This is basic to being an American, to travel where I will, those words of Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness comes to mind.
Instead, my government chooses to take the means to travel away from me, the roads I use by right, are closing down for me, and my Government leaders say that I'm not part of the transportation picture.
I beg to differ. I'm not a free loader, I have paid for my citizenship with 22 years of military service, and I am a disabled veteran. I have looked for the remainder of my life hoping to see positive change in this country. Where my children and grandchildren can have a better country to live in.
Instead I see blind party politics, indifferent to the needs and dreams of Americans, bent only on their own empty victory at our expense.
This isn't politics as usual, this is a mean-spirited attack on our future.
I know who I will vote for.

Well, it looks like we have a week to organize an education effort to the full House about the damage this committee mark-up will cause. We need to get the other House members who weren't in this committee educated about the importance of transportation enhancements, Safe Routes To School, trails and other biking/walking infrastructure. We not only need to emphasize the safety impacts of biking/walking infrastructure, but also the economic benefits. Biking/walking infrastructure can help revitalize dying downtown business centers, and we need to make sure our representatives know that.

While I am somewhat saddened by the vote, I am encouraged by some of the comments here. Our job is to encourage biking and teach others that cycling is the way of the future. I personally am saddened that some people might lose their jobs. As for my general opinion, we need to stop funding every bill that comes across the desk because it is warm and fuzzy to some group. Even if it is us. We are broke as a country and we cannot afford to spend money on projects we cannot afford. I think we need to get our house in order on a lot of pet projects and just stop the government spending money on every whim and bailout that crosses their desk. I think we should stop most foreign aid as well, especially to our enemies. We need to take care of our own people in this country first.
I did not want to make this political and I am not a supporter or either party like rah rah stuff. I am just sick of our government wasting our tax dollars and then asking for more.
