Great comments! I can't wait for the day that we don't have to talk about gender — when women and men ride at equal (or near-equal) rates in the US, like in other countries like the Netherlands! Kudos to Katie, E M and all the other women setting such a great example and inspiring others in their communities — and within the NBC!

I ride in the greater St. Louis area and have been encouraged to see more women out riding these days. On a recent organized ride there was a group of three women doing the distance (70 mile) option. One thing more women riding is more likely to lead to more kids riding, especially to school. That is because if women think it is safe to ride, they are more likely to encourage their kids to do so. Although there have been some awesome dads out there on the NBC getting their kids to ride or inspiring them by their actions ...

Papa: Like you I think EVERYONE should be encouraged to ride much more often.

While I cannot attest to the delicate differences between male and female riders, I CAN attest to the difference between male and female drivers.....at least from a bikers perspective. ;)

Rob: I am not a female and I don't see this as 'genderizing.' I see it as a way to inspire more participation by women in everyday commuting or errand riding (as opposed to the once in a while weekend wheel around or even the fast weekend ride.) It's been proven that the more bikes there are on the road, the safer it is for bikers (more bikes = more awareness of bikes by motorists and a higher comfort level for them). Plus I find female bikers to be more courteous than their male counterparts... but that's another thing altogether.

Thanks for the article. I am a 57-year old woman who gets around Minneapolis-St Paul on her bike. Although I partially agree with Rob about "genderizing" everything, I think it's important to encourage women when it comes to a field or an activity that has long been a male dominion. I hope you will take a look at my most recent blog, "10,000 Miles at Any Speed" Find it at: www.annreedblog.blogspot.com
Thanks again for your fine work!
