Interesting perspective. I’ve been biking in Boston since the time I was a student at Boston University in the mid 1970’s. Sometimes, it seemed easier biking back then with fewer cyclists. Now I fear for my safety in narrow bike lanes, sandwiched between parked cars and a traffic lane. Timid cyclists, thinking it is safer to ride closer to parked cars than moving traffic, will pass me on the right and I fear that when they are doored they will fall in my path causing me to crash and be hit by a passing car. There is nowhere in Boston I would feel safe accompanying a ten year old child on bikes. It makes it very challenging to bike with a child on city streets to the Charles River bike path. The criteria for winning an award should reflect upon how many ten year old children are biking along side an adult. Only once did I see an adult biking with a child on Commonwealth Avenue and I bike here nearly every day.

Don't mention the god awful helmet markings to any self respecting Boston cyclist (well the posters that go with them are much worse to be fair). For sure though Boston has come a long way but there is plenty of room for improvement for sure. It is worth it to hop on a Hubway and explore, much safer than it use to be helmeted or not.

Right on, Alison! Boston has done so much to earn the League's Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community Award. I had the pleasure of presenting that award to Mayor Tom Menino. The hard work of Nicole Freedman, Boston Bikes and the alignment of so many local advocates has truly made Boston a great place to ride!
